2008 Alpine Courses

:: Certificate Ski Instruction

Pre-requisite – Skiing ability Level 5 or above (NZSIA Class Level System

The certificate (CSI) level ski instructor is certified to teach up advanced beginner skiers (levels 2). Minimum age of 16 years.

The Certificate in Ski Instruction is a 4 day course and exam for those intending to work in the snowsports industry.

Course content includes teaching adults and children from first time to wedge turning (level 1 thru level 2). Understanding the teaching model and the learning process, skier analysis of these levels, technical information and demonstrating at these levels, class handling and safety. Personal skiing will also be improved towards the level.

Candidates should be advanced parallel skiers (level 5) using a pole touch and comfortable on all groomed terrain including some easy off-piste.

:: Stage One

Pre-requisite – NZSIA Certificate in Ski Instruction member or the foreign equivalent and an NZSIA associate member

The Stage One level ski instructor is certified to teach up to advanced intermediate level (level 4). Mimimun age of 17 years.

The Stage One (Alpine) is an 8 day course/exam for those who want to pursue a career in the snowsports industry.

Course content includes teaching from wedge turning to advanced parallel turns with a pole plant (level 2 thru level 4). Understanding the teaching model and the learning process, skier analysis of these levels, technical information and demonstrating at these levels, class handling and safety. Personal skiing will also be improved towards the level.

Candidates should be advanced skiers that can ski dynamically on & off piste and are able to perform a basic short turn.

:: Stage Two

Pre-requisite – NZSIA Stage One member or the foreign equivalent and an NZSIA associate member

The Stage Two level ski instructor is fully certified to teach all levels up to advanced/experts (level 6).

The Stage Two process is divided into two parts, a 5 day preparation course and a 3 day exam. Candidates may sit the exam either in the season that they take the pre-course or the following season.

The aim of the pre-course is to introduce the guideline progressions for level 5 thru 6 and situational skiing, provide candidates with input on their skiing and give direction to further train toward to exam.

During the three day exam process candidates will be tested in three areas; demonstrations, free skiing and teaching. The specifics of these are outlined during the pre-course.

Candidates should be advanced/expert skiers that can ski dynamically at speed on & off piste in a variety of turn sizes and shapes.

:: Trainers Certification

Pre-requisites – Held NZSIA Stage Two for two winters and an NZSIA member

The Trainer’s Certification is to qualify candidates as trainers. It is also a necessary step in perusing work as an NZSIA Examiner.

:: Freeskiing Camp

Pre-requisites - Paid member or associate member

Free Skiing Camps are run over three days and are open to all NZSIA members, full and associate. The purpose of these camps is to work on individual member’s technique without exam pressure. A maximum of 1:-8 trainer / participant ratio allows for excellent individual feedback.

These camps are ideal for anyone who is looking to improve their skiing using a combination of coaching and mileage.

:: Pipe & Park Coaches Course

Pre-requisite – NZSIA Stage One member or the foreign equivalent and an NZSIA associate member.

The Park & Pipe Coach is certified to coach students/athletes in the Park & Pipe.

A four day course/exam delivered by NZSIA free ski trainers. The course caters for those ski instructors who have some experience in the half pipe and terrain park. It is designed to train instructors how to coach students/athletes. It focuses on progressions for introducing elements of pipe and park, development of basic tricks and understanding of safety elements. There is a formal assessment for this course that involves both skiing and coaching.
